Earthquake writing

On Thursday there was quite a buzz in Room 18 about the earthquake that had shaken us in our homes in the morning. After sharing our experiences, some students chose to write about it:

I was on top of my bunk bed. I was scared. Then I went to the supermarket. In the supermarket my milk nearly fell out of the trolley.
Regan

My TV shook in the earthquake.
Jesse

This morning there was a(n) earthquake at my house and I had to go under the table.
Mila

This morning there was an earthquake and I got really scared but I did what you are supposed to do. I was sitting in the lounge watching TV bit I went under the table.
Kaia

My dad was in the office and the office shook.
Emele

There was an earthquake and I felt it.
Olive

An earthquake shook my house.
Riley

My bed was shaking. I fell down.
Skylah

I was going downstairs to see what the shaking was.

Sesame Street Alphabet Song

This week at Kotahitanga time we are going to be singing the Sesame Street Alphabet Song.  Lola was very happy when I suggested uploading it to the Blog - she loves this song!

Take some time to practise it at home with your Mum or Dad, brother or sister.

Kapa Haka - Come along and join in!

Our Kapa Haka sessions are on every Wednesday at 12.10pm.  Matua Rangi does a fantastic job at leading our waiata.

The children's waiata is improving every week.  The teachers are getting better to!

Even Mr Ken has started to come along.  He plays the guitar with Matua Rangi.

We have lots of fun singing and learning new songs and their actions.

It was great to see Lola's Mum (Sheree) and her two younger brothers Otto and Caspar there this week.  We look forward to seeing more whanau at Kapa Haka in the coming weeks.

Discovery Time

Discovery Time art involved painting on tables!

and some popcorn

and many other activities.

A teacher reflection comment this week was how good it is to see our tamariki taking a risk and  exploring in other classrooms. There was a real mix in Room 18 this week. It is lovely to see the interaction between other children.

Rad Rhythm

The Discoverers will be doing a Rad Rhythm course this term. The course is online but with lots of interaction (banging, clicking, clapping!).

Today we started the course. For this first lesson we worked with Room 15.

Sticks ready....da...da...da-da-da. We look forward to progressing through the course.

Meeting our big buddy class

Today we met with our buddy class, our big buddies. The children in Room 2 are Year 5/6 students and were excited to meet us - well, there were lots of smiles when they came in!

Today we met each other and joined in some developmental activities together. Our challenge was to learn the names of one, two or three of our buddies.

Our big buddy class will be joining us regularly on a Friday morning. Together we will work on spelling, reading and other sharing activities. In particular, our buddies will support us on our spelling programme. Keep a look our for spelling homework in our home learning books. These books will need to be in our book bags each day, but particularly on Fridays.

GYMFUN - we need parent helpers please

GYMFUN - Important notice - 3rd May 2016

We are very lucky to have the opportunity to participate in the GYMFUN programme, but unfortunately this programme will not be able to run without parent support.  At the moment we are short on parent help.  Please if you are able to help transport children and assist the children during the lessons, let us know ASAP.

Many thanks,
Carolyn Esen and Sam Colledge

Blessing of our new Rangatahi block

What a wonderful way to start Term 2.
The whole school was able to visit the new classrooms and be a part of a very special blessing to officially open the building.

Koro Don came to lead the proceeding as a representative for the local iwi.

Koro Don entered the new building first and all the children followed behind, listening to his incantations and prayers in Te Reo Maori.

WOW!  What a great new space!

We sang songs with Matua Rangi.

The seniors helped to lead the singing.

The seniors performed the Haka at the end.
